Abstract

Growing environmental concerns, the impacts of climate change, and the rapid depletion of natural resources have highlighted the need for businesses to adopt sustainable approaches to growth. In this context, green entrepreneurship has emerged as an important means of balancing economic development with environmental protection. By encouraging innovation, promoting cleaner production methods, and making efficient use of resources, green enterprises contribute to both business success and long-term sustainability. This paper examines the concept of green entrepreneurship, its key characteristics, the opportunities it offers, the challenges it faces, and its increasing significance in supporting India's sustainable economic development.

The study follows a descriptive and exploratory research design and is based entirely on secondary data collected from academic literature, government publications, policy documents, and reports issued by national and international organizations. It reviews the evolution of green entrepreneurship in India and evaluates its contribution to sustainable growth through environmentally responsible business practices and innovation. The paper also discusses recent developments in renewable energy, the expansion of green startups, changing consumer preferences for sustainable products, employment generation, and government initiatives aimed at encouraging environmentally responsible enterprises.

The findings suggest that increasing environmental awareness, rapid technological progress, supportive government policies, and rising demand for eco-friendly products have created favourable conditions for the expansion of green businesses in India. Despite this positive trend, several barriers remain, including high initial investment costs, limited availability of green finance, technological challenges, and inadequate awareness among entrepreneurs and consumers, which continue to restrict wider adoption.

The study concludes that green entrepreneurship has considerable potential to support India's transition towards a more sustainable and resilient economy by combining innovation with environmental and social responsibility. To fully realise this potential, greater policy support, improved access to finance, stronger research and innovation ecosystems, entrepreneurial skill development, and closer collaboration among government, industry, educational institutions, and financial organisations will be essential.
