Sustainable Agribusiness Management: A Conceptual Framework for Balancing Economic, Social and Environmental Value
Main Article Content
Abstract
Sustainable agribusiness management has become increasingly important as agricultural enterprises face the simultaneous challenges of economic competitiveness, environmental degradation, resource scarcity, social inequality and changing stakeholder expectations. This conceptual paper develops an integrated framework for understanding how agribusiness organizations can balance economic, social and environmental value while pursuing long-term sustainability. Drawing on the literature on agribusiness sustainability, agricultural innovation, rural development, digital transformation and sustainable supply-chain management, the paper conceptualizes sustainability as a multidimensional process of value creation rather than as an isolated environmental initiative. The proposed framework integrates sustainability-oriented strategy, organizational capabilities, technological innovation, stakeholder collaboration and sustainable supply-chain practices as key mechanisms supporting integrated value creation. The discussion demonstrates how resource efficiency, digital technologies, inclusive value chains, knowledge sharing and collaborative governance can potentially generate complementarities between economic performance, social welfare and environmental protection. An illustrative sustainability scorecard is also proposed to demonstrate how organizations can evaluate balanced performance across the three dimensions. The paper contributes theoretically by connecting organizational capabilities and stakeholder collaboration with integrated sustainability outcomes in agribusiness. It provides a foundation for future empirical research and offers managers a structured approach for incorporating sustainability into strategic decision-making, performance measurement and long-term agribusiness development.
