UNREPORTED CYBER CRIMES IN INDIA
Main Article Content
Abstract
Cybercrime, with its ever-evolving complexity, poses a significant threat to individuals, businesses, and the nation of India. This paper explores the prevalence of unreported cyber crimes in India, despite the emergence of dedicated cybercrime reporting portals and initiatives. The study delves into factors contributing to under-reporting – such as lack of awareness, fear of retaliation, and low confidence in the legal system – that lead many incidents to go unreported. As a result, perpetrators often remain unpunished and continue to pose risks to society. Recognizing the severity of cybercrime and its potential impact on personal and financial security is crucial. Reporting incidents and taking preventive measures can promote a safer cyberspace. This research investigates common types of cybercrime in India and analyzes the impacts of unreported incidents on individuals, organizations, and society. It highlights the need for comprehensive reporting mechanisms, educational programs, and awareness campaigns to encourage reporting. The paper also proposes recommendations to address under-reporting, such as promoting cyber awareness, enhancing investigation and prosecution processes, and providing additional resources to law enforcement agencies. India’s success in countering the growing cyber threat will depend on its ability to encourage reporting of incidents, increase public awareness, and implement effective measures to deter cyber attacks.
